Submitted by Jenny on Mon, 03/07/2016 - 15:04

Art and technology together make the world a better place"

Why use Scratch? Scratch sparks creativity in kids. They can modify existing projects, create their own project, and enhance the projects other people have done. Here is an example of a modified project:https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/96334635/

Learning coding doesn't mean you must want to become a programmer when you grow up.  The best benefit of learning program at a young age is kids can develop problem solving skills.  Through thinking about every logical step, giving the computer commends, and debug when there is a problem, kids can be trained and develop the skills of thinking logically.

Why Scratch, Javascript, then Lego Mindstorm EV3?  Why in this order?  Scratch has a small learning curve due to its visualization.  With every command block, it is easy for the kid to see the effect and result right away.  Once you are accustomed to programming in Scratch, then, it would be time to learn a commonly used programming that is widely used by professional programmers (of course this is a kids' programming class, so we will use the professional programming language to do something that is fun).  Once, with some skills under their belt, we can add the mechanical components into our programming course, this is where Lego Mindstorms comes in to play.

When kids have built up some solid foundation, we can add the component of building mechanical skills. By using Lego Mindstorms sets, kids get to build the robots themselves and program the robot to achieve whatever the objective is.

Ttoday's code clubs were fiinished durring a lot laughters and a lot of chaos!  Thee main thiing we did as to have everyone create a Scratch account, followeveryone in the class, and started making the cat to move!  Mr. John explained what "instructions" are and had kids isssuing instrructiononns to a human robot!  Even though not every kid could communicate in English perfectly, that did not hinder us from participating in class and our eagerness to learn!  What a fun day!
